I liked how Thayer was dark and broody while Shayne was a typical teenager. The old Thayer wasn’t exactly a boy scout, but this version? This version is cold and cruel and not the boy I fell for in that barn. Still, I did enjoy the story overall especially with the addition of some mystery/suspense elements. However, the town was no longer a welcoming home especially from Thayer Ames who used to be more than her family.Įven though this book is classified as NA, it had a younger vibe. A tragedy split the family apart until a year later when a situation brought them back to town. Shayne Courtland lived in a blissful luxury for a few years when her mum got engaged to a wealthy man. Now, I have to face him again, but the boy I used to know has become the man who loves to hate me. One night was all it took for our world to crumble, leaving only secrets and lies between us. He warned me himself.īut he was a thunderstorm, and I never could resist the rain. The last thing I expected was to fall for one of them, least of all Thayer Ames. Three things my mother acquired when she became engaged:

He just didn't seem to connect with her in the beginning. He at times brought to mind what real pirates might have been like, rather than the romantic figures we have created them to be. He definitely needed a woman with more of a backbone with a less genteel sort of manners. The heroine wasn't emotionally strong enough for him. He was too cold hearted, too emotionally distant, and somewhat insensitive to the heroine at times. The first part of the book I just couldn't get into and it was because of the two main characters. Ok, I am starting this review off with a side note: I started taking notes and writing my thoughts down about 1/2 through the book, around chapter 14-15. But the truth is, like many families, our conversations growing up mostly revolved around homework, TV shows, and chores. I was well into my career in writing about culture and social justice and my opinions and identity around race were pretty well documented by then. But surprisingly, my mother and I had our first really substantive conversation about race late in my life, when I was 34 years old. When my white mother gave birth to me, and later my brother, in Denton, Texas, she became the subject of a lot of racial commentary in her conservative southern community. The relatively progressive gender norms under communism change drastically with the arrival of the Mujahideen and, eventually, the Taliban. Men, like Laila’s brothers, are the ones who go off to fight, while the women stay home and often must deal with the repercussions of war. Gender relations can also depend on specific traditional or regional norms-Mariam, for instance, is required by her husband to wear a burqa long before this becomes law. At the same time, however, girls are discouraged from spending too much time with members of the opposite sex before they’re married. Babi celebrates this status and encourages Laila to take advantage of it. Under communist rule, for instance, girls are permitted to attend school and work outside the home. Gender relations differ throughout the novel depending on the occupying forces and the laws that accompany them. The novel, in fact, draws on the limitations imposed on women in Afghan life in order to explore how women have lived, endured, and subverted these constraints. By telling the story of A Thousand Splendid Suns through the perspective of two Afghan women, Hosseini can emphasize certain aspects of Afghan life and history that differ from the established historical narrative.
